NEWS - EndNote update required
EndNote 21 is the current version installed on WA Health computers.
Unlike previous updates, this version of EndNote may change the libraries so they are not able to be used with an earlier version of EndNote, so please backup your Library prior to upgrading.
Ideally the updates at work and at home need to be done around the same time so that your EndNote libraries are usable both at work and at home. Please upgrade your home version of EndNote to EndNote 21 or later, or it will NOT be compatible with your work PC.
The WA Health libraries have a whole of WA Health licence for EndNote for work or home installation.
To have EndNote installed or updated on a work computer at NMHS you should log a job with HIN [Intranet link only] or with the Help Desk on 13 44 77.
Please contact Technical Support for help with conversion or backwards compatibility issues.
Please contact the Library if you have any questions.
Using EndNote is a great way to manage your references. The software will help you to keep track of your references and use them in your research and publications.
When you are searching databases like Medline/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO or Google Scholar you will be able to export your results to EndNote.
PDF copies of articles (if they have associated metadata), can be imported into EndNote and used to complete the reference details automatically.
You can harvest PDFs from the Library collection to go with the references in your library using the Find Full Text function. Note that you will need to change your preference settings for this to work.
Once you have created your EndNote library you will be able to insert the references into your Word documents (using the Cite While You Write feature). You can create in-text references and a bibliography that can be formatted in the reference style of your choice (Vancouver, APA, Harvard etc).

The WA Health Libraries Network (WAHLiN) has purchased a WA Health-wide EndNote licence.
At WA Health IT supported sites log a job to have EndNote installed on your work PC.
Fiona Stanley Hospital staff email the help desk to log a job.
You need to set some preferences in order to make use of the Find Full Text function within EndNote.
Note that ‘Find full text’ will work well for many journals but will not work for some where full text access is in fact available. Some records will not contain enough information for the article to be retrieved (it’s important to import complete references), access to some titles may only be available via an aggregator and not from the publisher URL that comes with the record, and some journals need to be accessed via a path that includes a login and this cannot be incorporated into EndNote’s Find Full Text search.
Edit EndNote preferences once you have the program open.
For Windows, go to:
Edit; Preferences; Find Full Text
For Macs, go to:
EndNote, EndNote Preferences; Find Full Text
Tick all four boxes: Web of Science; DOI; PubMed LinkOut; and OpenURL.
Do NOT tick the box "Automatically invoke Find Full Text on newly-imported references". If you tick this box it will restrict full-text retrieval as it only pulls in the full text for references that were imported from text files. If the references were imported through direct export or from online search the find full text function will fail.
On WA Health PCs, in the Authenticate with: box, type this URL https://www.google.com.au/ (this step is NOT necessary for home installations).
In the OpenURL Path box, you need to put the link to the Library’s open URL resolver.
https://login.pslibresources.health.wa.gov.au/login?url=https://findit.health.wa.gov.au/ps
The Find Full Text function also works more effectively if you have an EndNote Online account established and if you login and keep open an active browser session whilst running the function.
The librarian is happy to teach skills in using EndNote. Email the Library to make a time that suits you.

Please note that EndNote 20 is still installed on WA Health computers. HSS is working on packaging 21 for deployment.
The WA Health licence agreement for EndNote allows for home installation on PCs or Macs.
Agree to the terms and conditions by completing a form - for PCs or Macs.
PC Downloads
Once you have done that, the software will automatically download.
If you are upgrading from an earlier version of EndNote, you will need to do the following:
Back up your EndNote Library along with any EndNote styles, filters or connectors that you have customised.
Click here for instructions to ensure correct installation.
Click here for compatibility and system requirements. Please note that EndNote 21 requires Windows 10 or above.
Click here to sign the licence agreement and begin the download of the installation files.
Contact Clarivate for product support.
For information on how to do this refer to the following resources.
EndNote: Upgrade from an older version (clarivate.com)
EndNote: Moving, backing up, or transferring libraries to another computer (clarivate.com)
EndNote: Backing up Libraries, Content Files and Custom Preferences
When you install EndNote it writes a 'cite-while-you-write' toolbar into Word. You should open EndNote first, and then open Word to check to see if this has happened. If not, check the EndNote help on Install Word CWYW Toolbar.
After installation, remember to change the EndNote preferences in order to make use of the Find Full Text functionality within EndNote.
Mac Downloads
Please note that EndNote 20 is still installed on WA Health computers. If you already have EndNote 20 installed on your home PC, you may prefer to delay upgrading to EndNote 21 until this version is installed on WA Health PCs.
Click here for compatibility and system requirements. Please note that EndNote 21 requires Mac OS10.14 or above.

My EndNote Web complements your EndNote desktop library by enabling you to:
• Work collaboratively and share your EndNote Library.
• Access your EndNote library from multiple locations without making multiple copies of your library.
Set up an EndNote Web account
Why? If you have integration between your desktop application and EndNote Web set up, the Find Full Text Function retrieves more full text than EndNote is able to if this is not synced.
Once you have your account set up, go into EndNote preferences on your desktop application, choose
Edit
Preferences
Sync
Enter your EndNote Web Account Credentials and hit apply.
The password used for myendnoteweb.com and Web of Science/WoS has to be exactly the same (since WoS is now maintained by Clarivate Analytics). If they are not in sync you will get this message:
“Invalid email/password. Please try again”
This is particularly important in syncing content between desktop EndNote libraries and content in your myendnoteweb.com account.
If you have different passwords - unsync in EndNote (via Edit>Preferences>Sync), update password (use the WoS password), then sync plus use the WoS password to Sign in into the myendnoteweb.com

EndNote works with filters, connectors and styles
filters to pull records from databases into EndNote (Medline, PsycInfo, Web of Science, Embase etc),
connectors to search out to sources such as PubMed from within EndNote and
styles to format referencing according to various styles (such as publisher specific styles, as well as Vancouver, Harvard, APA etc).
EndNote is installed with filters connectors and styles, though it may be necessary to get updates from EndNote.
It is possible to customise filters connectors and styles. If you do this the customised files are not stored in the program files (so that they are not lost if EndNote is uninstalled).
Some useful connectors and filters that are not included in the default files are available for download below.
